Tips for Creating an Ethnic Home

You return from a trip with memories, moments forever, impressions of other cultures… and also with many ideas for your home. This usually happens if you visit Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia or Bali, among others. You see a kilim for the wall or floor of your living room, mud cloth cushions or forge tables and wicker chairs and you would like to buy everything to add a new touch to your home.

Ethnic style? One of the latest trends in interior design that comes to revolutionize the industry with its prints, upholstery and accessories. Because the key to this style is in the small details, which is why it is considered one of the most customized trends.

Venis | Features of this Style

You can decorate all the rooms with Eastern inspiration, but we recommend starting with the dining room / living room and kitchen and then moving on to the bedroom. Here we go; in today’s blog we tell you the most typical features of ethnic style:

  • Earthy and warm colors: Ideally you should go for beige, ochre, saffron yellow, rocky grays and blacks. The latter will serve to create contrast. We used it for the living room chairs and the dining room shelf. Other accessories also have this dark touch.
  • Mud Cloths: This technique allows us not to find two identical prints in the original fabrics. Cushions, blanket, kilim or trays with Asian, African, Eastern, Indian finish… Play with natural colors and different patterns.

  • Wooden furniture, wrought iron and wicker: Wood or an imitation is very typical… Normally used in chairs and tables. This natural and handicraft style is also worn for flowerpots and magazine racks.
  • Furniture: Poufs, earth-colored ceramic pots or tea tables are a good complement. We have used it in the dining room to organize a meeting with friends and have a good time. Of course, this area could not be missing a carpet. Tea tables and pots on top… All in one.
  • Decorative details: Sometimes, in the smallest pieces is where you find the distinction. Ethnic style is also based on objects such as pitchers, glasses, boxes, bowls, candles… We have made a strong bet on the kitchen shelf and the dining room because the front is all glass so you can see what’s behind.

  • Fabrics: If you like to have blinds or curtains, no problem. This type of interior design has a place for them as well. Respecting the natural colors, you can choose linen, silk or natural cotton. In our case, we have preferred the blind / roll-up.
  • Bamboo: Plants in a house always bring pure air and joy so in this style could not be missing. But you must know what kind of plants are the most suitable. We highlight bamboo.

But all this is not possible without a good choice of floor and wall covering. At Venis we recommend ceramics with a stone or cement appearance. Let’s leave aside metallized and oxides (more for industrial style) or marble (for more stately rooms). Specifically, we have designed it with the Urban collection.

Venis | Urban Collection

This series fuses the image of cement with the scratching of the stone, leaving a very subtle flooring, but reminiscent of the hardness of archaeological exhibitions typical of Tunisia or Morocco.

This product becomes ideal for these three open rooms because we do not focus on it and can combine with any type of decoration we want. It combines equally well with a print on the pillow as with a cane blind with stripes.

Venis | Three Different Colors

It is available in four colors, so we have decided to make use of them all. For the kitchen, the Urban Black floor tile looks great with the worktop also in a dark colour. In order not to leave a room too dull, we have installed Urban Steel (45 cm x 120 cm) in the walls.

In the part of the dining room there is Urban Natural since the dark touch is provided by the furniture and for the living room, we have installed Urban Caliza because we were looking for a quieter environment that would convey peace.

Here we have also opted for Cubik Urban. The small cubes provide the relief and depth required in a space in which length predominates over width.

Other collections such as Madagascar or Austin from Venis can fit in very well. Have fun and create incredible combinations!
